Sephardic Route

1492 was a very remarkable year. It was not only the year of the first trip that Christopher Columbus did but also the year that the most terrible mistake of the Catholic Monarchs’ kingdom happened: the Diaspora, the expulsion of the Jews.

The most reliable historic information shows that the arrival of the Jewish in Spain in substantial number and in more or less organized way took place during 4 centuries, from the 2nd century B.C and second century A.C. At the end of the Roman Empire, the Jewish communities were settled and consolidated, primarily farmers. During the Roman Empire and the beginning f the Visigoth Empire, the Jews had no more problems in Spain than in other countries. But things changed in 568, when the Visigoth king Recared converted to Catholicism and ordered the religious unity in the kingdom: that was the beginning of their oppression and persecution, and even was reduced to perpetual slavery by king Egica. That moment probably was also the beginning of the doctrine of “one faith” under terror and death.

In 711 was the invasion of the Muslims, and that meant the liberation of the Jews. That’s why they began to serve their new rulers. The Muslims were tolerant with the Jewish religion, and the Jews only had to pay a tax. During the Caliphate of Cordoba began the most important period for the Jews in Spain: during 10th and 11th centuries, the Jews had the greatest prosperity and cultural level outside Israel.

During the kingdom of the Catholic Monarchs, the Jews were remarkable subjects and with great influence culturally, in the political administration and economically. But nothing could stop the Expulsion Eviction that forced to the ones that did not want to leave their religion to convert to Catholicism to leave the country. A great number of them converted, probably looking for a better life than exile. But History showed us that better life didn’t happen: they were controlled and oppressed by the most efficient machine of political and religious repression in all history...“The machine of Terror": The Inquisition.
